1758 – 1828Franz Joseph Gall (1758-1828)Died 22 August 1828, aged 70Franz Joseph Gall was a physician and neuroanatomist who originated phrenology, the theory that mental faculties could be read from the shape of the skull. Though phrenology was later discredited as a diagnostic method, his work drew serious attention to localized brain function. He practiced for many years in Vienna before settling near Paris.

Both sides agreed to recognize the territory as an independent state rather than let either power annex it. This agreement laid the groundwork for the Republic of Uruguay, formally constituted the following year.
