1827Baltimore and Ohio Railroad charteredFirst US railroad chartered as a common carrierMaryland granted a charter to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, the first railroad in the United States chartered to carry freight and passengers for hire. Construction began the following year and the line became a model for American railroad development.
