1767 – 1826Joao VI of Portugal (1767-1826)Died 10 March 1826, aged 58King of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves, Joao VI had ruled the Portuguese empire from exile in Rio de Janeiro during the Napoleonic occupation before returning to Lisbon in 1821. His death triggered a succession dispute between his son Pedro, Emperor of Brazil, and his other children that led to the Liberal Wars.
