1765 – 1825Eli Whitney (1765-1825)Died 8 January 1825, aged 59Eli Whitney was an American inventor best known for the cotton gin, patented in 1793, which mechanized the separation of cotton fibers from their seeds. The invention transformed the American cotton economy and, by expanding demand for enslaved labor, deepened the institution of slavery in the South. He died in New Haven, Connecticut, on 8 January 1825.
