1824Battle of AyacuchoDecisive patriot victory ends Spanish rule in South AmericaOn 9 December 1824, forces under Antonio Jose de Sucre defeated the Spanish royalist army near Ayacucho, Peru. The battle effectively ended the Spanish American wars of independence on the mainland, securing independence for Peru and the future Bolivia. It followed Simon Bolivar's earlier victory at Junin that same year.
