1823Leo XII elected popeAnnibale della Genga succeeds Pius VIIFollowing the death of Pope Pius VII, the papal conclave elected Cardinal Annibale della Genga, who took the name Leo XII. His pontificate was marked by conservative governance of the Papal States and efforts to revive religious orders. He would serve until his death in 1829.
