He died in Berlin after a long illness.
1822Massacre of ChiosOttoman forces kill and enslave the island's Greek populationAfter a failed uprising, Ottoman troops landed on the Aegean island of Chios and killed tens of thousands of Greek inhabitants, enslaving many more. News of the massacre shocked Western Europe and strengthened sympathy for the Greek cause, later inspiring Eugene Delacroix's painting 'The Massacre at Chios'. The killing and enslavement continued for weeks after the initial landing.
