1820Ottoman Sultan declares Ali Pasha of Ioannina an outlawSiege of Ioannina begins, a prelude to Greek independenceSultan Mahmud II moved against his overmighty governor Ali Pasha of Tepelena, stripping him of his titles and sending an army to besiege his stronghold at Ioannina. The prolonged campaign diverted Ottoman forces and helped create conditions for the Greek uprising the following year.
