1748 – 1819Charles IV of Spain (1748-1819)Died 20 January 1819, aged 70Charles IV reigned as King of Spain from 1788 until his forced abdication in 1808, when Napoleon manipulated the Spanish crown during the Bayonne affair. He spent his final years in exile, eventually settling in Rome, while his son Ferdinand VII was restored to the Spanish throne. His reign is remembered chiefly for the dominance of his favorite minister, Manuel de Godoy.
1819University of Virginia charteredThomas Jefferson's university is establishedThe Virginia General Assembly chartered the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, founded on the initiative of former president Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson designed its campus around an "Academical Village" centered on a domed library rather than a chapel, reflecting his vision of secular higher education. Classes began two years later, in 1825.
