• 1819 Dulong-Petit law formulated French physicists link atomic weight and specific heat Pierre Louis Dulong and Alexis Therese Petit published their finding that the specific heat capacity of many solid elements, multiplied by their atomic weight, gives approximately the same constant value. The law provided chemists an early method for estimating atomic weights. It remained an important tool in chemistry until quantum theory later explained its basis and limits.
