1748 – 1818Charles XIII of Sweden (1748-1818)Died 5 February 1818, aged 69Charles XIII reigned as King of Sweden and, briefly, Norway, having been elected heir and regent after the overthrow of Gustav IV Adolf. His rule was largely ceremonial, with real power held by his adopted heir, the future Charles XIV John. He died without a surviving direct heir, passing the throne to his adopted son.
1818Chilean independence proclaimedBernardo O'Higgins formally declares Chile independentSupreme Director Bernardo O'Higgins formally proclaimed Chilean independence from Spain at Talca, timed to the anniversary of the Battle of Chacabuco. The declaration followed years of fighting in the Chilean War of Independence. Full military security for the new state came weeks later at the Battle of Maipu.
