1817New York enacts gradual abolition of slaveryAll remaining slaves to be freed by July 1827New York Governor Daniel D. Tompkins signed a law providing for the complete abolition of slavery in the state, with all enslaved people to be freed by July 4, 1827. It was one of the last major gradual emancipation laws passed in the Northern United States.
