1755 – 1813Gerhard von Scharnhorst (1755-1813)Died 28 June 1813, aged 57Scharnhorst was a Prussian general and military reformer who rebuilt the Prussian army after its defeat by Napoleon in 1806. He was wounded at the Battle of Lutzen and died weeks later from the injury. His reforms laid the groundwork for Prussia's later military successes.
1813Battle of VitoriaWellington breaks French power in SpainAn Anglo-Portuguese-Spanish army under the Duke of Wellington routed King Joseph Bonaparte's French forces near Vitoria in northern Spain. The defeat effectively ended French control of Spain and forced Joseph to flee the country. The battle later inspired Beethoven's orchestral work Wellington's Victory.
