1736 – 1813Joseph-Louis Lagrange (1736-1813)Died 10 April 1813, aged 77Lagrange was an Italian-born mathematician and astronomer who made foundational contributions to mechanics, calculus of variations and number theory. His treatise Mecanique Analytique reformulated Newtonian mechanics and remained a standard reference for generations. He died in Paris, where he had worked for decades under successive French governments.
