1812Battle of SalamancaWellington defeats a French army in open battle, turning the Peninsular WarOn 22 July 1812 the Duke of Wellington's Anglo-Portuguese army defeated Marshal Marmont's French force near Salamanca, Spain, in a rare large-scale open battle of the Peninsular War. The victory allowed Wellington to advance and briefly occupy Madrid. It is regarded as one of Wellington's finest tactical performances.
