1768 – 1812Charles Etienne Gudin de La Sablonniere (1768-1812)Died 22 August 1812, aged 44Charles Etienne Gudin de La Sablonniere was a French general and close associate of Napoleon who commanded an infantry division during the invasion of Russia. He was mortally wounded by a cannonball at the Battle of Valutino and died days later. Napoleon is said to have been deeply affected by the loss of one of his most trusted commanders.
1812First commercial steamboat service in Europe beginsHenry Bell's "Comet" starts regular passenger service on the ClydeIn August 1812 engineer Henry Bell launched the steamship "Comet" into regular passenger service on the River Clyde in Scotland, the first commercially successful steamboat operation in Europe. The vessel's success helped spur the rapid growth of steam navigation on British and European waterways. It ran until wrecked in 1820.
