• 1811 New Madrid earthquake sequence begins Major earthquakes strike the central Mississippi Valley A massive earthquake struck near New Madrid in the Missouri Territory, the first of a series of powerful quakes that continued into early 1812. The shocks were felt across much of the eastern United States and temporarily altered the course of the Mississippi River. They remain among the most powerful earthquakes recorded in North American history.
