1729 – 1811Louis Antoine de Bougainville (1729-1811)Died 31 August 1811, aged 81French admiral and explorer who led the first French circumnavigation of the globe and wrote an influential account of Tahiti. The flowering plant bougainvillea was named in his honor. He later served as a naval commander in the American Revolutionary War.
1811British forces invade JavaBritain seizes the Dutch East Indies' main island during the Napoleonic WarsA British expeditionary force landed on Java and defeated the Franco-Dutch garrison defending the colony, which had come under French control after Napoleon annexed the Netherlands. The campaign placed Java under British administration, with Thomas Stamford Raffles installed as lieutenant governor. The island was returned to the Dutch in 1816.
