1810Grito de DoloresMiguel Hidalgo's call to arms begins the Mexican War of IndependenceCatholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang the church bell in the town of Dolores and urged parishioners to rise against Spanish colonial rule. His cry launched an uprising that grew into the eleven-year Mexican War of Independence. The date is now commemorated annually as Mexico's independence day.
1810First Government Junta of ChileSantiago forms an autonomous junta following the Spanish crown's crisisAmid the collapse of royal authority in Spain, notables in Santiago established a junta to govern Chile in the name of the deposed King Ferdinand VII.
