1731 – 1810Henry Cavendish (1731-1810)Died 24 February 1810, aged 78Cavendish was a reclusive British scientist who discovered hydrogen, determined the composition of water and air, and conducted the experiment that measured the density and mass of the Earth. His wealth and aversion to publicity meant many of his findings remained unknown until decades after his death. The Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge is named in his honour.
1810Siege of Cádiz BeginsFrench forces blockade the last redoubt of free SpainFrench troops under Marshal Victor laid siege to Cádiz, where the Spanish Regency and Cortes had taken refuge after the collapse of resistance elsewhere in Spain. British and Portuguese reinforcements helped the city hold out behind its sea defenses. The siege dragged on for more than two years without the city ever falling.
