• 1810 Napoleon Marries Marie Louise of Austria A political marriage secures an alliance between France and Austria Napoleon I married Archduchess Marie Louise of Austria, niece of Marie Antoinette, in a civil ceremony at Saint-Cloud followed by a religious ceremony at the Louvre. The marriage followed his divorce from Josephine and was intended to secure an heir and tie the Habsburg monarchy to his empire. Their son, Napoleon II, was born the following year.
