• 1808 Battle of Vimeiro Wellesley's army halts the French invasion of Portugal British and Portuguese forces under Arthur Wellesley defeated the French army of General Jean-Andoche Junot near the village of Vimeiro. The victory forced the French to negotiate their withdrawal from Portugal.
• 1808 Convention of Cintra French troops evacuate Portugal after Vimeiro British and French commanders signed an agreement allowing the defeated French army to withdraw from Portugal with its weapons and loot aboard British ships. The lenient terms provoked public outrage in Britain and a formal inquiry into Wellesley's conduct.
