1738 – 1805Charles Cornwallis (1738-1805)Died 5 October 1805, aged 66Cornwallis was a British general and statesman best known for his surrender at Yorktown in 1781, which effectively ended major fighting in the American Revolutionary War. He later served as Governor-General of India, implementing administrative reforms, and died at Ghazipur during a second term in that post. He is also remembered for negotiating the Act of Union with Ireland.
