1805Lewis and Clark Expedition reaches the Pacific OceanAmerican explorers sight the Pacific after an overland crossingMembers of the Corps of Discovery, led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, reached the mouth of the Columbia River and sighted the Pacific Ocean in November 1805. The expedition had traveled overland from St. Louis across the Louisiana Purchase territory. They wintered nearby at Fort Clatsop before beginning the return journey.
