1743 – 1805William Paley (1743-1805)Died 25 May 1805, aged 61Paley was an English clergyman and philosopher whose works on natural theology and utilitarian ethics, including Evidences of Christianity and Natural Theology, were widely read and influenced later debates on design in nature, including Charles Darwin. He served as Archdeacon of Carlisle. He died in Lincoln in 1805.
1759 – 1805Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805)Died 9 May 1805, aged 45Schiller was a German poet, playwright, and philosopher whose works, including Don Carlos, Wallenstein, and William Tell, helped define German classical literature alongside his friend Goethe. His poem "An die Freude" ("Ode to Joy") was later set to music by Beethoven in the Ninth Symphony. He died in Weimar after a long illness.
1805Napoleon crowned King of ItalyNapoleon adds the Italian crown to his titlesIn Milan Cathedral on 26 May 1805, Napoleon crowned himself King of Italy, extending French control over northern Italy. He placed the Iron Crown of Lombardy on his own head, echoing his earlier self-coronation as French emperor. The move alarmed Austria and contributed to the formation of the Third Coalition.
