1805Muhammad Ali becomes Wali of EgyptOttoman governor founds a new ruling dynastyAfter local notables and the Cairo ulema demanded his appointment, the Ottoman Sultan confirmed Muhammad Ali Pasha as Wali, or governor, of Egypt on 9 July 1805. His rise ended years of instability following the French occupation and the departure of the Mamluk beys. He went on to found a dynasty that ruled Egypt until 1952.
1805Battle of Cape FinisterreInconclusive naval clash ahead of TrafalgarOn 22 July 1805, a British fleet under Robert Calder engaged a combined French and Spanish fleet off the coast of Galicia, capturing two Spanish ships in an inconclusive action. The battle disrupted Franco-Spanish plans to combine their fleets for an invasion of Britain. The surviving combined fleet later fought at Trafalgar that October.
