1755 – 1805Nicolas-Jacques Conte (1755-1805)Died 6 December 1805, aged 50Conte was a French scientist and balloonist who developed the modern process for manufacturing pencil leads from graphite and clay during a wartime graphite shortage. He also directed the scientific and artistic survey accompanying Napoleon's Egyptian campaign. He died in Paris in 1805.
