1805Battle of DernaUS Marines and mercenaries storm a Barbary strongholdOn 27 April 1805, a small force of US Marines and foreign mercenaries led by William Eaton, supported by naval gunfire, captured the Tripolitan city of Derna. It was the first time the United States flag was raised in victory over a foreign city. The battle later gave rise to the phrase "to the shores of Tripoli" in the Marine Corps Hymn.
