He later served as a general in Napoleon's army. He died of illness while on campaign in Taranto, Italy.

He also composed operas and worked as a conductor in Vienna. He died of tuberculosis.

Captured after the rising collapsed, he was convicted of treason and publicly executed. His speech from the dock made him a lasting symbol of Irish republicanism.
1803Battle of AssayeWellington defeats Maratha forces in IndiaBritish East India Company forces under Major-General Arthur Wellesley, later the Duke of Wellington, defeated a much larger Maratha army at Assaye. The victory was a turning point in the Second Anglo-Maratha War and a major step in British dominance over central India. Wellesley later called it his finest military achievement.
