• 1803 Ohio admitted as a US state Ohio becomes the 17th state of the Union Ohio was admitted to the United States as the 17th state, the first to be carved from the Northwest Territory. Its admission reflected rapid American settlement west of the Appalachians. Chillicothe served as the new state's first capital.
