1743 – 1803Toussaint Louverture (1743-1803)Died 7 April 1803, aged 59Toussaint Louverture led the Haitian Revolution, rising from enslavement to become the effective ruler of Saint-Domingue and abolish slavery in the colony. He was lured into a trap, arrested by French forces in 1802, and deported to France. He died in captivity at Fort de Joux.
1803Louisiana PurchaseUnited States buys French territory for $15 millionFrance sold its Louisiana Territory to the United States for roughly $15 million, doubling the size of the country. The sale was negotiated by Napoleon Bonaparte, who needed funds for war in Europe and had abandoned hopes of a North American empire. The transfer of sovereignty was completed in New Orleans on 20 December 1803.
