• 1801 Alessandro Volta demonstrates the voltaic pile to Napoleon Early battery technology presented to the French National Institute In November 1801 physicist Alessandro Volta traveled to Paris to demonstrate his voltaic pile, the first true electric battery, before Napoleon Bonaparte and the French National Institute. Napoleon was impressed and later awarded Volta a medal and a pension. The device gave scientists their first reliable source of continuous electric current.
