• 1801 Battle of Alexandria British expedition defeats Napoleon's army in Egypt On 21 March 1801 a British expeditionary force under Sir Ralph Abercromby defeated French troops near Alexandria, Egypt. Abercromby was mortally wounded during the fighting and died of his injuries a week later. The victory began the collapse of the French occupation of Egypt.
