• 1741 – 1801 Benedict Arnold (1741-1801) Died 14 June 1801, aged 60 Benedict Arnold, the American general who defected to the British during the Revolutionary War, died in London on 14 June 1801. He had attempted to hand over the fortress at West Point to British forces in 1780 before fleeing when the plot was discovered. His name became a byword for treason in the United States.
