1749 – 1801Domenico Cimarosa (1749-1801)Died 11 January 1801, aged 51Italian composer Domenico Cimarosa died in Venice on 11 January 1801, having fled Naples after being imprisoned and sentenced to death for supporting the short-lived Parthenopean Republic. He was among the most celebrated opera composers of his era, best known for the comic opera Il matrimonio segreto. His death sentence had been commuted to exile shortly before he died.
1801Act of Union creates the United Kingdom of Great Britain and IrelandGreat Britain and Ireland merge into a single kingdomOn 1 January 1801 the Act of Union took effect, merging the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland into the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The Irish Parliament in Dublin was abolished and Irish members began sitting at Westminster. A new Union Flag combining the crosses of England, Scotland, and Ireland came into use.
