1800Act of Union 1800British and Irish parliaments merge into a single kingdomThe Act of Union 1800 abolished the Kingdom of Ireland's parliament, merging it with Great Britain to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 1 January 1801. It followed the 1798 Irish Rebellion and was pushed through with substantial bribery and patronage. Irish Catholics who had been promised emancipation in exchange for support were denied it, a betrayal that shaped Irish politics for over a century.
