• 1797 Coup of 18 Fructidor French Directory purges royalist rivals in a bloodless coup Fearing a royalist resurgence after legislative election gains, the French Directory, backed by the army, annulled election results and arrested or exiled dozens of royalist deputies and journalists. The coup, named for its date in the Revolutionary calendar, deepened France's reliance on military force to sustain its government. Many of those purged were deported to French Guiana.
