1797Treaty of Campo FormioFrance and Austria end the War of the First CoalitionNapoleon Bonaparte, acting largely on his own authority, concluded a peace treaty with Austria at Campo Formio, ending the War of the First Coalition. Austria ceded the Austrian Netherlands and recognized French control of the Rhineland and northern Italy, while receiving Venice in compensation. The treaty left France dominant on the European continent until war resumed in 1798.
