1726 – 1797James Hutton (1726-1797)Died 26 March 1797, aged 70Hutton was a Scottish geologist whose observations of rock formations led him to propose that the Earth was shaped by slow, ongoing natural processes over immense spans of time, rather than a short biblical timescale. His ideas, later termed uniformitarianism, laid the foundation for modern geology. He is often called the father of modern geology.
