1797Spithead and Nore MutiniesRoyal Navy sailors mutiny over pay and conditionsSailors of the Channel Fleet at Spithead, followed by ships at the Nore, mutinied to demand better pay, food, and conditions, briefly paralyzing the Royal Navy. The Spithead mutiny ended peacefully with concessions, but the Nore mutiny was suppressed and its leader, Richard Parker, was hanged. The unrest exposed deep grievances within the fleet during wartime.
