1796Battle of ArcoleNapoleon secures a narrow victory over Austrian forces near VeronaOver three days of fighting around the village of Arcole east of Verona, French forces under Napoleon Bonaparte narrowly defeated an Austrian army attempting to relieve Mantua. The battle, fought partly on a causeway through marshland, became renowned for an episode in which Napoleon personally led a charge under fire.
