1740 – 1795William Smellie (1740-1795)Died 24 June 1795, aged 55The Scottish printer and naturalist was the first editor of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, compiling and partly writing its original edition in Edinburgh. He also translated and wrote influential works on natural history. His editorial work helped establish the Britannica as a major reference work.
1795Jay Treaty ratifiedUnited States and Britain settle outstanding disputesThe United States Senate ratified the Jay Treaty, resolving disputes left over from the Revolutionary War and averting a renewed conflict with Britain. President Washington signed it in August despite fierce domestic opposition. The treaty secured British withdrawal from frontier forts but was criticized for failing to address impressment of American sailors.
