1794Battle of the Glorious First of JuneMajor naval battle between British and French fleets in the AtlanticThe Royal Navy under Admiral Richard Howe engaged the French fleet in the Atlantic to intercept a vital grain convoy from the United States. Britain won a tactical victory, capturing or sinking several French ships of the line. The French convoy, however, reached port safely.
1794Law of 22 Prairial EnactedFrench law strips legal protections from suspects during the TerrorThe National Convention passed the Law of 22 Prairial, removing the right to legal counsel and witnesses for those accused of counter-revolutionary crimes. The law dramatically accelerated the pace of trials and executions in Paris. The period that followed became known as the Great Terror.
1794Battle of FleurusFrench Revolutionary army defeats Coalition forces in the Austrian NetherlandsFrench Revolutionary forces defeated a Coalition army of Austrians, British, and Dutch troops near Fleurus in present-day Belgium. The victory opened the way for France to reconquer the Austrian Netherlands. It also saw the first military use of an observation balloon in combat.
