1755 – 1794Georges Couthon (1755-1794)Died 28 July 1794, aged 38French politician and member of the Committee of Public Safety, closely allied with Robespierre during the Terror. Paralyzed from the waist down, he was carried to the guillotine in a wheelchair. His death came the same day as Robespierre's.
1758 – 1794Maximilien Robespierre (1758-1794)Died 28 July 1794, aged 36French lawyer and politician who became the dominant figure on the Committee of Public Safety and the chief architect of the Reign of Terror. He used revolutionary tribunals to send thousands of perceived enemies of the Revolution to the guillotine. He was overthrown in the Thermidorian Reaction and guillotined without trial the next day.
1767 – 1794Louis Antoine de Saint-Just (1767-1794)Died 28 July 1794, aged 26French revolutionary and close ally of Robespierre known for his uncompromising speeches and role on the Committee of Public Safety. He oversaw military and political purges during the Terror. He was arrested alongside Robespierre and guillotined the following day.
1794Thermidorian Reaction Topples RobespierreRobespierre is overthrown, ending the Reign of TerrorMembers of the National Convention turned against Maximilien Robespierre, arresting him and his closest allies on 9 Thermidor. Robespierre and his supporters were guillotined the following day without trial. The coup ended the Reign of Terror and shifted power to a more moderate Convention.
