1794French Convention Abolishes SlaveryNational Convention decrees the abolition of slavery in all French territoriesThe French National Convention voted to abolish slavery throughout France and its colonies, partly in response to the slave uprising in Saint-Domingue. The decree freed enslaved people in French possessions, though it was later reversed by Napoleon in 1802. It was one of the first such abolitions by a major colonial power.
