1721 – 1794Chretien de Malesherbes (1721-1794)Died 22 April 1794, aged 72French statesman and former royal minister who volunteered to defend King Louis XVI at his trial. His courageous defense of the king made him a target of the Revolutionary Tribunal. He was guillotined along with several members of his family.
1759 – 1794Georges Danton (1759-1794)Died 5 April 1794, aged 34French lawyer and a leading figure of the early Revolution who helped overthrow the monarchy and organize the Committee of Public Safety. He later called for moderation and an end to the Terror, drawing the suspicion of Robespierre. He was tried and guillotined along with his political allies.
1760 – 1794Camille Desmoulins (1760-1794)Died 5 April 1794, aged 34French journalist and revolutionary whose pamphlets helped incite the storming of the Bastille in 1789. A close friend of Danton, he used his newspaper to criticize the excesses of the Terror. He was guillotined alongside Danton and other moderates.
1794Battle of RaclawiceKosciuszko's first major victory of the uprisingPolish insurgent forces under Tadeusz Kosciuszko, including peasant scythemen, defeated a Russian force near the village of Raclawice. The victory boosted morale and recruitment for the uprising. It remains one of the most celebrated battles in Polish national memory.
