1791French Constitution of 1791 adoptedFrance becomes a constitutional monarchyThe National Constituent Assembly completed France's first written constitution on 3 September 1791, establishing a constitutional monarchy with separation of powers and a single legislative chamber. Louis XVI accepted it on 13 September, formally ending absolute monarchy in France. It remained in force only until the monarchy's abolition the following year.
