1739 – 1791Grigory Potemkin (1739-1791)Died 16 October 1791, aged 52Russian military commander and statesman who served as Empress Catherine the Great's most trusted adviser and, for a time, her lover. He directed the annexation and colonization of Crimea and New Russia, founding cities including Sevastopol and Kherson. He died near Iasi while negotiating the peace that ended the Russo-Turkish War.
1791Legislative Assembly convenes in FranceA new elected body replaces the National Constituent AssemblyFrance's Legislative Assembly held its first session on 1 October 1791 under the newly adopted constitution. Members of the preceding Constituent Assembly had barred themselves from election, bringing a wholly new body to power. Factional splits within it soon pushed France toward war and further revolution.
