1791Boundaries of the U.S. federal capital proclaimedPresidential proclamation sets the limits of the future Washington, D.C.On 30 March 1791 President George Washington issued a proclamation fixing the boundaries of the new federal district on the Potomac River. Pierre Charles L'Enfant was engaged to design the capital city within it. The district combined land ceded by Maryland and Virginia.
