• 1787 Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade founded Thomas Clarkson, Granville Sharp and others launch Britain's first abolitionist campaign group A group of Quakers and Anglican reformers founded the Society in London on 22 May 1787 to campaign for an end to the British transatlantic slave trade. It became the organisational core of the British abolition movement, later aided in Parliament by William Wilberforce.
